In December 2005, Gécamines and Platmin Congo Limited signed the prospecting contract for the Deziwa and Ecaille C polygons in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s copper belt. In December 2007, the option contract to guarantee and protect Platmin Congo's rights was signed. In August 2008, the joint venture agreement between Gécamines and Platmin Congo, creating Société Minière de Deziwa et Ecaille C Sprl(Somidec) was signed. In January 2016, a partnership framework agreement was established between Gécamines and China Nonferrous Metal Mining Group (CNMC), creating Societe Miniere De Deziwa (Somidez), which currently runs the mine.

Somidez is located in Mutshatsha Territory, Luilu sector, Mwanfwe customary group, 35 km from the town of Kolwezi. It is surrounded by the Lualaba River and Lake Kando. It borders the Mutanda Mining company. The concession is well fenced off to prevent incursions by illegal artisanal miners.
